HISTORY OF LES AMIS |

Since 1986, the year of its foundation, les Amis de la montagne has taken an active part in several projects designed to protect and enhance Mount Royal:
- Obtained support for the recognition of Mount Royal as a Heritage Site;
- Created the Fondation du Mont-Royal (Mount Royal Foundation) with the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal;
- Signed a cooperation agreement for the conservation of Mount Royal with the cities of Montréal, Outremont and Westmount;
- Participated in meetings with Montréal’s consultation bureau on the future of Mount Royal;
- Participated in the development of a master plan for the mountain;
- Carried out the “Smith House, Sentinel of Mount Royal” project, an educational and community activity centre;
- Rallied dynamic individuals and groups around a recovery plan for Mount Royal, following the January 1998 ice storm;
- Co-organised the 125th anniversary celebrations of Mount Royal Park in 2001 and collaborated on the creation of the Mount Royal Charter;
- Organised and hosted the Mount Royal Summit, a pivotal event in bringing the protection of the mountain on the political agendas of all levels of government; succeeded in adopting the Mount Royal Charter;
- Acquired an unoccupied and derelict property bordering Mount Royal Park and had it demolished to expand the mountain’s greenspace in 2002.
- Entered into a $7M partnership with Power Corporation of Canada for Phase One of the Beaver Lake restoration, including the renovation of the pavilion and the construction of an artificial skating rink.
- Succeeded in obtaining a provincial decree creating the Mount Royal Historic and Natural District on March 11, 2005.

Les Amis de la montagne came into being as the result of significant public mobilization against a project to build a tower on Mount Royal.
The efforts of les Amis de la montagne led to the signing of an agreement to preserve Mount Royal.
