SPECIAL FORUM ON MOUNTAIN BIKING IN THE CITY ON APRIL 16
Towards finding paths to sustainable solutions
Les amis de la montagne invites the community to participate in a special public forum on mountain biking in the city on Wednesday, April 16 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Marie-Victorin Pavilion of the Université de Montréal, located at 90 Avenue Vincent-d’Indy, near the Edouard-Montpetit metro station. This special forum is being held in parallel with the public consultations on the future of Mount Royal.
The objective of the special forum is to present to public with the state of advancement of the study on mountain biking in Montreal, followed by a question and discussion period.
During the special forum, Les amis de la montagne will present the following findings:
- Status of the site: the profile of cyclists on Mount Royal established via a questionnaire, as well as a presentation on the key issues for the mountain in regards mountain biking.
- Comparative study: examples of about 10 trails specifically designed for mountain biking in North American cities; presentation of potential solutions found to manage mountain biking in an urban context; presentation of potential trail sites in Montreal.
The study is being conducted by Les amis de la montagne in collaboration with a working group comprised of representatives from the Ville de Montreal and the police service, the Fédération Québécoise des Sports Cyclistes, the Association pour le développement des sentiers de Vélo de Montagne au Québec and Vélo Québec, and institutions on the mountain, such as the Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery, the Mount Royal Cemetery and the Université de Montréal.
Due to its geographic location and its topographic characteristics unique in Montreal, Mount Royal is the location of choice for the sport of mountain biking. Unfortunately, in the absence of adequate management, the practice of this sport on the mountain has significantly damaged the forest undergrowth, putting the very health of Mount Royal’s forest in danger. Moreover, this activity has the great disadvantage of frequently creating conflicts between cyclists and other mountain users, especially walkers.
Les amis de la montagne launched this important project on October 22, 2007, together with financial partners, Mountain Equipment Co-op and the Quebec Ministère des Affaires Municipales et des Régions.
