“We’re tied to our mountain”: truer than ever!
Winning conditions contributed to the great success of the 19th Corvée du Mont-Royal mountain clean-up on Sunday, May 2, 2010: fine, sunny weather and more than 475 enthusiastic Montrealers, who made a tangible contribution to the mountain’s conservation.
For this 19th edition of the clean-up, more than 100 bags of trash were collected from wooded areas constituting about 70 % of Mount Royal Park. A handful of oddities were collected, such as fire crackers, about 50 golf balls and a large camp site in the shape of a long house with three separate “rooms”.
Over 40 participants planted 350 indigenous trees and shrubs in an area adjacent to the children’s playground near Beaver Lake, including Red Oak, Sugar Maple, American Basswood, Hawthorn, Nannyberry and Redosier Dogwood.
Two teams evaluated previous tree plantings for their growth rate and another two teams cut down an area overtaken by common buckthorn, an exotic invasive species on the mountain.
The afternoon was dedicated to activities for the whole family organized to celebrate the renewal of spring and to underline the International Year of Biodiversity: the percussion group Samajam held tam-tam initiation sessions, Zoo Écomuseum presented a variety of animals and several organizations working for the improvement of our biodiversity presented kiosks, including the Université de Montréal and the Institut de recherche en biologie végétale, McGill University’s Centre de la Science de la Biodiversité du Québec, Nature-Action Québec, Agence Canadienne d’Inspection des Aliments and Les amis de la montagne.
The Corvée du Mont-Royal is the flagship event of “May 2010: Mount Royal Month”. Les amis de la montagne wish to thank the Ville de Montréal for its generous material and logistic contributions to the Corvée event, as well as the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation, principal partner of “May 2010: Mount Royal Month”. The activities in May are also made possible thanks to the participation of Group Yellow Inc., National Bank Financial Group, Rock Détente, Virgin Radio 96, CJAD 800 AM, La Presse, The Gazette and numerous collaborators and volunteers.
